In India, many government bodies hire Economics graduates for various roles. Typically, hiring is conducted through national-level examinations, interviews, and group discussion rounds. The following are some of the top government jobs that you can pursue after graduating from Economics.


Jobs in Indian Economic Services (IES)


IES is a Grade A central service that was established in 1961. Officers at the IES are responsible for providing financial advice, implementing development policies and programs, and handling economic administration. Their responsibilities include assisting the government with economics in virtually every government sector.



The eligibility criteria for candidates who wish to apply to IES are as follows:


  • The candidate must have earned a postgraduate degree from a recognized undergraduate or postgraduate program in Business Economics, Econometrics, or Applied Economics.

  • Examinees must be at least 21 years old to appear.

  • Depending on the category of the candidates, the upper age limit may vary. Candidates can appear for IES until they are thirty years old, SC/ST candidates can apply until they are 35, and OBC candidates can apply until they are 33. 

  • The exam is open to candidates with low vision, blindness, hard of hearing, deaf, autistic, deaf-blindness, etc., up to 40 years old. 

  • Veterans can apply until the age of 35 years old, including ECOS/SSCOS/Commissioned Officers Military Servicemen.

  • Candidates must be citizens of India, Nepal, or Bhutan. Tibetan Refugees who settled permanently in India before January 1 1962, can apply as well as Indians with a preference for permanent settlement from Burma, Pakistan, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Uganda, Zambia, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zaire, Malawi, Vietnam or Ethiopia who migrated here from these countries.


Reserve Bank of India (RBI) jobs 


You can also apply for different Reserve Bank of India posts as an economics graduate. Depending on your qualifications and education, the bank offers a variety of entry-level jobs and other opportunities. Various positions at the RBI, the regulatory bank of India, are available to qualified economics students at the entry and management levels. RBI, RBI Grade B and RBI Assistant conduct two types of recruitment.

RBI Grade B


  • A general candidate can apply for the exam if they are between the ages of 21 and 30. Candidates from SC/ST communities have a 5-year relaxation, candidates from the OBC communities have a 3-year relaxation, candidates from the physically challenged communities have a 10-year relaxation, and PH+OC candidates get a 13-year relaxation, and PH+SC/ST candidates have a 15-year relaxation.

  • Applicants for Officer Grade General must have graduated with a minimum cumulative score of 60%, with a 10% relaxation for reserved category applicants.

  • It is required that candidates possess a Master's Degree in Economics/ Econometrics/ Quantitative Economics/ Mathematical Economics/ Integrated Economics Course/ Finance with at least 55% marks,

  • Or an MBA in Finance/PGDM with a 55% aggregate marks

  • Or a Master's Degree in Economics in any subcategory, such as agricultural/business/development/application. Minimum of 55% aggregate marks.

  • It is necessary to be an Indian, Nepali, or Bhutanese citizen. Or someone of Indian descent who immigrated from Zaire, Ethiopia, the East African Countries of Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, UgaRBI Grade B, Burma, Pakistan, Zambia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam, or Tibetan refugees who migrated to India before January 1, 1962, to settle permanently.


RBI Assistant


  • A candidate can appear for the RBI Assistant examination if they are between the ages of 20 and 28.

  • Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree with a minimum of 50% in any subject to apply for the RBI Assistant examination.


Job opportunities at the State Bank of India (SBI)


The State Bank of India is one of the largest banks in India, employing thousands of people. To fill current vacancies at the State Bank of India, examinations are conducted for several profiles. 


There are three types of examinations conducted by the State Bank of India to recruit candidates, the SBI Clerk Examination, the SBI PO Examination, and the SBI SO Examination. 


Below are the eligibility criteria for all SBI exams.


SBI Clerk


  • The age range for SBI Clerk applicants is 20 to 28 years. The age relaxation for OBCs is 3 years. For SC/ST/Jammu & Kashmir domiciled candidates, it is 5 years, and for PWDs (SC/ST), it is 15 years.

  • A recognized university graduation is required for candidates in any field.


SBI PO


  • To apply for SBI PO, you must be at least 21 years old and no older than 30. Reserved category candidates have a lowered upper age limit.

  • SBI PO requires graduates in any discipline from a recognized university.


SBI SO


  • SBI hires candidates through its SO examination for a variety of positions. Consequently, the age limit varies from 25 to 45.

  • Students must graduate from a university to be considered for SO posts. However, the discipline varies by position.
